iPhone Air, iPhone 6: Apple May Have a New Launch Strategy

Most reports have suggested that Apple is trying to get its 5.5-inch iPhone Air phablet ready for launch at the same time as the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. However, some rumors have suggested that the in-cell technology in the larger screens has led to some production issues, which is why Apple may launch the 5.5-inch iPhone Air at a later date.
Now, a rumor out of the supply chain suggests that Apple might actually purposefully launch the two phones at different times. That’s certainly a new strategy, since it launched the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c at the same time. So, why the switch-up?
One source in the supply chain told Digitimes that Apple’s trying to do so in order to avoid competition between the two phones. “The different timetables have been set as Apple does not want to repeat the mistake it made in 2013 when it launched the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c simultaneously, said the sources,” the source said.
Typically, Apple doesn’t really worry about cannibalization of its own products so long as folks are buying its hardware. Also, if anything, the 5.5-inch iPhone Air is going to cannibalize and compete with the iPad Mini — since the two are so close in size — and it’s highly unlikely anyone plans to buy both iPhones.
We’re not sure we buy it, but Apple may have a strategy up its sleeves that we don’t quite understand yet. Hopefully we at least hear about both phones during the second or third week of September.

Microsoft Kills Nokia Android Efforts in Favor of Windows Phone

Microsoft just announced its plan to cut 18,000 jobs, mostly focused on its newly acquired Nokia workforce, but the company had even more bad news to share. Select planned members of the Nokia X Android lineup are on the way out, Microsoft said in a public memo, confirming plans to transition towards offering cheaper Windows Phone “Lumia” branded devices instead.
CEO Satya Nadella confirmed the news, burying the death of Nokia X at the bottom of a memo he released to the public earlier today. He notes that Microsoft needs to do better with both premium and low-cost smartphones. On the cheaper end, the company plans to “shift select Nokia X product designs” to run Windows software instead of Nokia’s modified version of Android.
Stephen Elop, the former Nokia CEO and current Microsoft head of devices, also offered a few more details on the company’s plans for Nokia X. Upcoming “designs and products” for future Nokia X devices will instead show up in the Lumia lineup. He adds that while the transition will begin immediately Microsoft won’t stop selling or supporting its current Nokia X models for the time being.
Nokia X always felt more like an experiment than a real product, but the company claimed it saw strong sales for the low-cost Android phones, especially in China. We’re not surprised to hear that Microsoft is killing off the Android line-up. It makes sense to offer all its devices under a unified Lumia banner, rather than support multiple competing brands and operating systems.

iPhone 6 infographic shows a nice visual rumors roundup

Building an imaginary phone from unconfirmed reports, no matter how many times they get repeated, is all anyone can do leading up to a device’s launch. For fans of the iPhone, imagining that upcoming handset can help the time go by. If that’s the case, then this new visual roundup should help quite a bit.
The iPhone 6 rumor infographic was put together by French publication Nowhereelse, and published on July 18. With the visual roundup, the site has compiled a list of the most talked about rumors, including the most leaked bits, and essentially put together the iPhone 6 in quite a different way. This isn’t just another mockup or render like we’ve seen so many times before, but a disassembled render that highlights some of the most talked about upcoming features.
Nowhereelse was able to piece the roundup together by reaching out to folks across the ‘net, including Sebastien Page and Christian Zibreg of iDownloadblog, plus others, to score the individual likelihood of these hardware elements or features appearing in the final design from Apple. For instance, the 4.7-inch display in the iPhone 6 is scored to have a 100 percent probability that it will come to fruition later this year. While, a feature like Dynamic Haptic Feedback (which Apple is tipped to include in future devices) only has a 25% score.
The visual rumor roundup includes over 10 different rumors or leaks, scoring the likelihood of each one. Essentially, it looks like the iPhone 6 could certainly be a powerful device when it lands on shelves later this year. But, whether we see just the 4.7-inch variant, or also get the 5.5-inch iPhone Air is still up in the air.
What is one feature you’re looking forward to most in the iPhone 6?

Curse of Malaysia Airlines? 5 tragic moments in airline's history before MH17 and MH370

The crashing of Flight MH317 is the latest in a string of terrifying and tragic incidents involving Malaysia Airlines
Malaysia Airlines has seen more than its fair share of bad luck in the last four months.
Tragedy struck today when Flight MH17, a Boeing 777 carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew crashed in Ukraine after reportedly being shot down by a Buk ground-to-air missile.
The plane, cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet, was flying from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is believed that all 295 people on board have died.
The latest crash comes just over months since Malaysia Airlines Flight M370, a Boeing 777 200ER carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew went missing between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, China.
Although it hasn't been found, officials from the airline and the Malaysian government agree believe it went off radar in the Southern Indian Ocean and that all 239 people on board were killed.
Two incidents of such tragic magnitude could be written off as a coincidence or bad luck.
But a closer look at the airline's history hints at a more sinister explanation: a curse.
Here, we look at a handful of other frightening aviation disasters, near misses and freak occurrences involving Malaysia Airlines flights.

December 4, 1977

The 'curse' began when a plane operated by Malaysian Airline System - the flag carrier arm of Malaysia Airlines - was hijacked and crashed, killing all 100 people on board.
Flight 653, a Boeing 737-200, was heading for the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, but was hijacked as soon as it reached cruise altitute and diverted to Singapore.
However, it crashed in the Malaysian village of Tanjung Kupang, with all 93 passengers and seven crew members killed instantly. The mystery surrounding the hijacking and crash remain unsolved.

December 18, 1983

Malaysian Airline System Flight 684, on its way back from Singapore, crashed just over a mile short of the runway in Subang.
The crash did not cause any deaths, but completely wrecked the Airbus A300B4, which had been leased from Scandinavian Airlines.
An investigation revealed the probable cause to be an error by the pilot who had neglected to monitor descent rate properly during poor visibility caused by heavy rain.

September 15, 1995

Thirty four people were killed when the pilot of Malaysia Airlines Flight 2133, a Fokker 50, misjudged the landing, touching down too far along the runway at Tawau Airport.
The plane crashed into a shantytown as the pilot lost control. Only 15 of the passengers and crew on board lived to tell the tale.

March 15, 2000

Malaysia Airlines Flight 85, an Airbus A330-300 was being unloaded at Kuala Lumpur when a highly-corrosive chemical called oxalyl chloride leaked from cannisters.
The toxic liquid caused serious damage to the fuselage, putting an end to the five-year-old aircraft's flying days.

August 1, 2005

AS Malaysia Airlines Flight 124 soared at 38,000 feet on its way from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, on, a faulty accelerometer caused a malfunction in the plane's air data equipment.
With the Air Data Inertial Reference Unit commanding changes of altitude, the crew had no choice than to override it, turn around and land it back at Perth.
Understandably, the incident sparked changes in software-checking procedures.

U.S. official: Missile shot down Malaysia Airlines plane

Malaysia Airlines jet crashes in Ukraine

(CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines passenger jet crashed in a rebel-controlled part of eastern Ukraine on Thursday, spurring swift accusations from Ukrainian officials that "terrorists" shot down the aircraft.
The United States has concluded a missile shot down the plane, but hasn't pinpointed who was responsible, a senior U.S. official told CNN's Barbara Starr.
The Boeing 777 with 298 people aboard fell from the sky near the town of Torez in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, officials said. A top Ukrainian official said the plane, which was on the way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was flying at about 10,000 meters (nearly 33,000 feet) when the missile hit.
A radar system saw a surface-to-air missile system turn on and track an aircraft right before the plane went down, the senior U.S. official said. A second system saw a heat signature at the time the airliner was hit, the official said. The United States is analyzing the trajectory of the missile to try to learn where the attack came from, the official said.
The Obama administration believes Ukraine did not have the capability in the region -- let alone the motivation -- to shoot down the plane, a U.S. official told CNN's Jake Tapper.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said the plane never made a distress call.
He called for an international team to have full access to the crash site.
"We must and we will find out precisely what happened to this flight. No stone will be left unturned," he said.
"If it transpires that the plane was indeed shot down, we insist that the perpetrators must swiftly be brought to justice," Najib said.
Ukrainian officials maintained that pro-Russian separatists were behind the crash.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine's military campaign against the separatists was to blame.
"This tragedy would not have happened, if there had been peace on that land, or in any case, if military operations in southeastern Ukraine had not been renewed," Putin said in televised remarks. "And without a doubt the government of the territory on which it happened bears responsibility for this frightening tragedy."
Ukraine's state security chief accused two Russian military intelligence officers of involvement and said they must be punished.
Valentyn Nalyvaichenko said he based his allegation on intercepts of phone conversations between the two officers. "Now you know who carried out this crime. We will do everything for the Russian military who carried out this crime to be punished," he told reporters.
The jet plunged toward the ground in a fireball, leaving a trail of black smoke behind in the sky.
Emergency crews scrambled to what witnesses described as a staggering scene of death and utter destruction.
"People said the plane kind of exploded in the air, and that everything rained down in bits and pieces, the plane itself, the people inside," said Noah Sneider, an American freelance journalist who interviewed witnesses at the scene.
Charred wreckage stretched for kilometers, he said. Stunned rescue workers and rebel fighters combed the area, Sneider said, planting sticks with white cotton ribbons where they found bodies in the fields.
"As you walk through the fields, you see a man with his cracked iPhone sticking out of his pocket. You see sort of people's clothing everywhere. Most of it's kind of ripped off by the air. There's some suitcases and stuff in a pile by the road," Sneider said.
There were many bodies left to be found as night fell, he said, and people were trying to figure out what to do next.
Locals in the rural area trying to help were overwhelmed, he said. Firemen who rushed to put out the flames found they had a hose with holes in it, spraying water everywhere, he said.
"One man said to me, 'Nothing's happened in this village for 30 years, and now this,'" Sneider said.
As details emerge, accusations fly
Details -- and accusations -- quickly poured in about Thursday's crash, which came the same week that Ukrainian officials said a Russian fighter shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane while the aircraft was in Ukrainian airspace.
Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, said in a Facebook post that "terrorists" fired on the plane operating a Buk surface-to-air missile system.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko described the crash as a "terrorist action."
"We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, according to his website.
CNN's Richard Quest, an aviation expert, said that it would be "extremely unusual" for an airliner at nearly 33,000 feet to be shot down.
From the ground, one could simply look up and tell whether a plane was a commercial aircraft, he said. "So something is absolutely appalling that's gone on here."
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said that Ukraine's president had accepted an offer of U.S. experts to help investigate the crash.
"They will be on their way rapidly to see if we can get to the bottom of this," he said.
Biden said the plane was apparently shot down, adding "not an accident, blown out of the sky."
Who was on the plane?
The 15 crew members on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 were all Malaysian nationals, officials said.
Malaysia Airlines also gave a breakdown of the known nationalities of the 283 passengers: 154 were Dutch, 27 were Australians, 28 were Malaysians, 12 were Indonesian, nine were from the United Kingdom, four were from Germany; four were from Belgium, three were from the Philippines and one was Canadian. Authorities were still trying to determine the nationalities of the other passengers.
The International AIDS Society said in a statement that "a number of colleagues and friends" were on the plane, on the way to attend the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
"At this incredibly sad and sensitive time the IAS stands with our international family and sends condolences to the loved ones of those who have been lost to this tragedy," the statement said.
Russia-Ukraine dispute
The route the Malaysian plane was on, between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, is a common one, CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo said Thursday. She said that the plane was flying over a troubled area and that close communication with air traffic controllers would be a key necessity.
Torez is in a rebel-held area.
In hostile or disputed areas, "any alteration from your course, and you can have a problem," Schiavo said.
Tensions have been high between Ukraine and Russia since street protests forced former pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych from power in February. Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's southeastern Crimea region, and a pro-Russian separatist rebellion has been raging in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
Ukrainian forces have been struggling to quell the separatist unrest. Ukraine's government has accused Russia of allowing weapons and military equipment, including tanks, to cross the border illegally into the hands of pro-Russian separatists.
The Pentagon said Wednesday that Russia now has 12,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, as well as some heavy weapons. The troop numbers had fallen to about 1,000 previously from a high of an estimated 40,000 forces earlier this year.
READ: Obama imposes new sanctions on Russia over Ukraine
On Thursday, CNN reported that Ukrainian officials said a Russian fighter shot down a Ukrainian jet Wednesday as the jet flew in Ukrainian airspace.
Tensions are high over that incident, separate from the breaking news of the Malaysian flight Thursday.
Three months ago, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration prohibited U.S. airlines from flying in areas not far from where Flight 17 reportedly crashed Thursday. "Due to the potential for conflicting air traffic control instructions from Ukrainian and Russian authorities and for the related potential misidentification of civil aircraft, United States flight operations are prohibited until further notice in the airspace over Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov," the FAA said in April. Thursday's plane crash reportedly was in eastern Ukraine, scores of miles north-northeast of the Sea of Azov.
On Thursday, French transportation official Frederic Cuvillier ordered that French airlines avoid Ukrainian airspace until the cause of Thursday's Malaysia Airlines crash is known, the French Transportation Ministry said in a news release.

Airline's troubles
Thursday's crash marks the second time this year that Malaysia Airlines has faced an incident involving a downed plane.
On March 8, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared. That Boeing 777 had 239 people on board. Searchers have found no trace of 370 or its passengers, despite extensive search efforts.
Flight 370 probably flew into the southern Indian Ocean on autopilot with an unresponsive crew, Australian authorities said last month.
During the early phase of the search for Flight 370, aircraft and ships scoured vast stretches of the surface of the southern Indian Ocean but found no debris.
Pings initially thought to be from the missing plane's flight recorders led to a concentrated underwater search that turned up nothing.
A new underwater search, farther south, will be broadly in an area where planes and vessels had already looked for debris on the surface of the water. It is expected to begin in August.
The first Boeing 777 entered service in June 1985, and the airplane has flown almost five million flights, accumulating more than 18 million flight hours, according to Boeing's web site. The plane is capable to flying up to 43,100 feet.
What next?

Aviation experts cautioned against jumping to conclusions about Thursday's crash at this early stage.
But all agreed that a massive investigation should be launched, involving parties not involved in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia,
The families of people on board will demand a transparent international investigation, and so will the global community, Quest said.
In the coming days, finding and examining the plane's data recorders will be key -- but the fact that the crash occurred in such a volatile region makes what comes next anything but certain, CNN aviation analyst and pilot Miles O'Brien said.
"The big question will be, in whose hands will they fall, and will this be a really objective, international investigation?" he said.
The wreckage path, O'Brien said, will reveal a lot. If a plane breaks up in midair, which is likely what would happen in a missile strike, there would be a large swath of wreckage, he said, but if it breaks down due to mechanical failure, the debris field would be more concentrated.

Samsung Level headphones finally arriving in the United States, Beats competition heats up

It’s hard to ignore the competition, especially when moves reflect so perfectly. For Apple, which is on the verge of acquiring Beats, seeing something like the Samsung Level premium headphones land in the United States probably isn’t a surprise at all.
Of course, options are good. For consumers looking for new headphones, of many different varieties, Samsung may have you covered. The Level headphones were introduced for international release not too long ago, but they’re finally coming to the United States in three different models. That includes a pair of over-the-ears (Samsung Level Over), on-the-ears (Samsung Level On), and in-ear (Samsung Level In). There’s a lot of stark colors here, from white to beige, so the Level headphones will certainly stand out. There are also black-hued models as well.
Samsung Level On
The portfolio includes: Level Over, Level On, Level In and Level Box. All four devices work seamlessly with smartphones and tablets, and the Level Over can be further customized using the Samsung Level App to elevate the audio experience. In addition, the Level portfolio easily syncs with Milk Music™ powered by Slacker, Samsung’s free music streaming service for select Galaxy devices*, offering an easy-to-use interface and more than 200 stations to further amplify your music listening experience.
Samsung Level In
The Level Over headphones will be available for $349.99, Level On for $179.99, with the in-ear headphones costing $149.99. They will all be available starting July 17 from Gilt.com. Samsung also has a Bluetooth-equipped box speaker included in the Level family, which will run you $169.99 if you opt for that route.
Obviously, you’ll be able to use these headphones with anything that you can normally plug some headphones into, including your iPhone, but Samsung has these ‘phones geared towards their own Samsung-branded devices. Specifically, there’s a Samsung Level application that will “elevate the audio experience,” and Samsung’s using the announcement to promote their own Milk music service, too.
Beats headphones work across a variety of devices, but there’s no doubt that there has always been a leaning towards iOS-based devices, like the iPhone. It even says as much on the box. For Samsung, entering a new market, with premium headphones, makes perfect sense — they love to go after just everything that has anything to do with the tech industry. Plus, going after premium headphones, where Beats has excelled, just puts them on that level with Apple. No pun intended.
Are you interested in these Level headphones at all? Or is Samsung biting off just a bit more than they can chew?

Jay Carney, former White House Press Secretary, reportedly being eyed for head of Apple PR

Quite a bit of news circling around Apple when it comes to advertising and PR in the middle of July for Apple. We heard earlier on July 14 that Apple might be parting ways with TBWA, with an eye to revamp advertising. Now, a significant name has been dropped for Apple’s chief of PR.
Based on a report released by re/code, it looks like Jay Carney is being considered to take the place at the head of Apple’s PR department. If Carney’s name sounds familiar, it’s because from February 2011 to June 2014, he worked as the White House Press Secretary. He has also worked as the Director of Communications for Vice President Joe Biden. Before that, as the Miami Bureau Chief for Time Magazine.
Carney would follow in the footsteps of Katie Cotton, Apple’s former Vice President of Public Relations, who retired earlier in 2014. It had been reported that Apple considered hiring for the position internally, however it is now widely believed that they are actively looking outwardly to fill the role. The report also states that Carney is also being considered for a similar role at Uber.
